About CBMS » Sustainability Statement

CBMS commitment to sustainable science At the Chemical and Biological Microsystems Society (CBMS), we believe that scientific progress must go hand-in-hand with environmental responsibility. As a global community working at the interface of chemistry, biology, and microsystems engineering, we are uniquely positioned to drive sustainable science and technology.

To support this mission, we have taken the following steps:
  • Sustainability-focused research: At MicroTAS 2025, we are introducing a Hot Topic Session on Sustainability, Environment, and Resources to highlight work in our field with the potential for meaningful environmental impact.
  • Minimizing travel-related emissions: Since 2020, all abstract evaluations have been conducted virtually, replacing previous in-person Executive Technical Program Committee (ETPC) meetings that required international travel. This practice continues with the Technical Program Committee (TPC) conducting remote reviews starting in 2025, thereby supporting greener operational practices.
  • Maximizing the value of in-person meetings: We are dedicated to enriching the experience of live meetings by fostering inclusive networking, mentorship programs, and focused discussion groups. These efforts especially support early-career members and those navigating career transitions, helping to ensure travel to events such as MicroTAS and CBMS Special Topics Meetings is purposeful and impactful. Satellite events further extend opportunities for collaboration and community building.
  • Expanding virtual engagement: We continue to support meaningful online activities, including the biennial Global Health Workshop and our new microTAStic seminar series, which brings the community together virtually on a monthly basis.
These initiatives reflect our ongoing commitment to embedding environmental responsibility into the fabric of our community. We welcome feedback and collaboration to further advance sustainability within CBMS.
