Chairs’ memories

Albert was hired in mid-1993 after his time in Neuchâtel to promote MicroTAS research, and got a one year contract plus $25k to organize a workshop on this topic. This allowed him to invite several speakers.

Favorite memory: Most surprising I guess was the large attendance (around 170, while we wanted 50+) and the enthusiasm of young (Andreas, Jed, Thomas, at that time!) researchers.

Most challenging aspects: I remember some people got confused that there was no train from Amsterdam Airport to ‘Twente’, as there is no such city called ‘Twente’. Instead people had to travel to Enschede, which was somewhat confusing. We also had a mix of chip-based researchers and ‘old style’ analytical chemists, like Prof. van der Linden, who were pretty skeptical about this new ‘MicroTAS’ approach.

Topics & Attendees

  • basic concepts of μTAS technologies and components
  • industrial applications
  • gas and liquid analysis systems

170 participants, Europe (83%), North America (7%), Asia (10%)

Workshop Excursion

Trip to a technology museum near Hengelo (Heim) to admire some old macro-machines followed by dinner in an old big farmhouse-like restaurant where Piet Bergveld welcomed everyone dressed in a typical famer’s outfit, including wooden shoes!

The first poster prize was a small Twente midwinterhorn.
Piet Bergfeld dressed up as old farmer together with Andreas Manz playing the midwinterhorn.
